Des Moines Macintosh Users Group Bylaws

Article I - Name and Purpose

Section 1

This organization will be formally known as the "Des Moines Macintosh Users Group" or DMMUG in abbreviation.

Section 2

The purpose of the DMMUG is the promotion and the education of the use of Macintosh Computers and operating systems.

Article II - Membership

Section 1

A person will be considered a full voting member of the DMMUG upon the payment of yearly dues at a regular meeting. The membership will last one calendar year.

  1. The dues amount will be determined at the second regular meeting of each year by vote of the current membership. Dues taken at the first 3 meetings will be considered retroactive to the first meeting of the year. To allow for new membership during the calender year, dues payments will be pro-rated to the remaining portion of the year.

  2. Yearly budgetary needs will be reported to the membership by the executive committee and posted to the DMMUG email list at least one meeting prior to a membership vote of approval.

  3. Membership benefits will include access to any discounts available to members as negotiated by the officers and or committees set up for that purpose. This would include password access to any Apple or Mac web sites that are exclusive to MUG membership.

  4. Onsite tech support given by any member of the DMMUG to another individual is considered to be a contract between individuals. Fees are to be determined between those individuals, not by the DMMUG.

  5. The DMMUG will charge fees, as a group, for people outside the membership for fund-raising purposes only. Said fees and their purpose will be determined by the membership before the fund-raiser and the amount received will be placed in the DMMUG treasury for use by the group.

Section 2

A member shall be expelled from the DMMUG upon recommendation of 50% of the Executive Committee and a 75% vote of the current full membership. An expelled member will forfit the remainder of the year's dues and will not be eligible for full membership for one calender year. At that time an expelled member must have the vote of 50% of the entire membership to regain membership status.

Section 3

The DMMUG will not endorse or distribute software to its members without the express permission of Apple or any other software company. It is not responsible for individual members personal use or distribution of unauthorized materials.

Section 4

The DMMUG is not responsible for, or guarantee against, any problems created by any technical support information given by members or speakers at meetings or on our DMMUG mailing list.

Article III - Executive Committee

Section 1

The Executive Committee is responsible for the day-to-day operation of DMMUG and its various committees.

Section 2

The Executive Committee shall consist of the President, Vice President, Secretary-Treasurer, Webmaster, and Sergeant-at-Arms.
  1. The President shall be responsible for conducting the meetings, signing agreements for speakers, general public relations, contracts with Apple and confirming the meeting locations.

  2. The Vice President will be responsible for conducting the meetings in the absence of the President, planning of the programs presented at the meetings and the signage announcing the meetings.

  3. The Secretary-Treasurer will be responsible for the minutes of the meetings, correspondence concerning the group, maintainence of all fiduciary matters, and maintainence of a current list of all full members. Said person will post a meeting announcement on the DMMUG email list before each meeting.

  4. The Webmaster shall be responsible for any Design Committees, implementation, and web site administration as proposed by the DMMUG membership.

  5. The Sergeant-at-Arms will be responsible to help maintain order and decorum at meetings. Said person will also serve as a tie-breaker in Executive Committee votes.

Section 3

The election of the Executive Committee shall take place on a yearly basis, at the second regular meeting of each year. The new officers will take office at the third regular meeting of the year.

Article IIII - Voting

Section 1

In general matters not specified, a vote greater than 50% by both attending membership and proxy votes by non-attending members will be considered enough to pass a given issue.

Section 2

All votes shall be announced at least one meeting before the actual tally of the votes recieved. This is to allow any members who cannot attend meetings a chance to place a proxy vote on the DMMUG mailing list. The DMMUG email list will allow the membership a fair accounting of all votes placed therein by the members who cannot attend. Results of votes will be announced at meetings and posted to the DMMUG email list.

Section 3

Any rapid or emergency decisions that require a vote of the membership shall be posted to the DMMUG email list for rapid consideration and approval. The results of the vote will be posted on the email list and announced at the next available meeting.

Section 4

In the expulsion of elected officers, 75% of the full Membership will be considered a quorum. In the executive committee, a quorum will be all the members of the committee.

Section 5

All monitary expenses greater than $50 must be approved by a majority vote of the entire membership.

Article V - Amendments

Section 1

A proposal offered as an amendment to these bylaws shall have to be passed by more than 50% of the executive committee and with a minimum of 60% of the full membership of the DMMUG to be considered an amendment.
